James Maury Harwell letters, 1941-1942.

Copies of two typed letters by Harwell, one addressed to U.S. Senator Pat Harrison, the other to U.S. Senator Burton K. Wheeler, strongly urging a negative vote on the proposed "Lease-Lend Bill" (probably referring to the Lend-Lease Act). Also included is a photocopy of a typed memo to J. M. Harwell by M. E. Hill, County Agent, concerning a scrap iron campaign.

Burton Kendall Wheeler was born in Hudson, Mass., on 27 Feb. 1882 and moved to Montana shortly after his graduation from law school in 1905. He began his law career in Butte, serving as U.S. Attorney for Montana from 1913 to 1918 prior to his election to the U.S. Senate in 1922. Pat Harrison was born at Crystal Springs, Miss., taught school at Leakesville, Miss., was admitted to the bar in 1902, and served as district attorney for the second district of Mississippi (1906-1910).
